Man VS. Self
Man VS. Society
Man VS. Man
MAN VS. SELF: While Ponyboy loves his brothers, he does seem to feel stressed and depressed at home. He feels pressure daily (especially thanks to Darry) to be the "smart one" and do incredibly well in school.
MAN VS. SOCIETY: All of society sees the Greasers as poor hoodlums from the east side who are nothing but trouble. They look past the violence of the upper class Socs and refuse to see the Greasers for the kind young men they really are.
MAN VS. MAN: Tensions between the rivaling gangs of Socs and Greasers increase when, in an act of self-defense, Johnny kills a Soc named Bob, who was coincidentally one of the Socs who had beaten him up in the past.
