Bill Clinton was elected for President of the United States in 1992, and reelected for a second term in 1996.
In May of 1994, a sexual harassment case is filed by Paula Jones against Clinton, and is deferred until after Clinton's presidency. Meanwhile, Clinton and his wife, Hillary, are being investigated for an investment scandal known as the Whitewater Controversy.
In July of 1995, Monica Lewinsky begins working at the White House as an unpaid intern, and is soon promoted to a paid position in the office of legislative affairs
Monica and Bill soon begin an affair that will continue sporadically over the next 18 months. Monica leaves the White House in April, 1996, for a job in Public Affairs at the Pentagon.
Linda Tripp, who also works at the Pentagon in the office of Public Affairs, begins to tape her telephone conversations with Ms. Lewinsky in September 1997.
Ms. Lewinsky is subpoenaed for the Paula Jones case in December of 1997 and leaves her job at the Pentagon days later.
