Where did they come from?
The Third Punic War
In the first Punic War, the Romans and Carthaginians fought against each other. It lasted 23 years. The Romans defeated the Carthaginians. The Carthaginians then left Sicily.
The Second Punic War began. The Carthaginians were led by Hannibal. They surprised the Romans by marching from Spain through southern Gaul. Then through the Alps to Italy. They rode on elephants to help break through Roman lines.
Before the Third Punic War began, there was peace for about 50 years. The Romans saw that the Carthaginians were regaining power, so they burned and plowed salt into their field so nothing would grow. They killed the Carthaginians, or sold them into slavery.
