One day, in a cave in Arcadia, Zeus came to visit a nymph named Maia (one of Atlas' daughters).
A while later, Maia gave birth to a son. His name was Hermes. Right after he was born he went out to explore.
The first thing he saw was a tortoise... which he decided to kill, to make an instrument he called a lyre.
But when Apollo went looking for his cattle, he couldn't find it. He asked an old shepherd who said he saw a baby leading them away. He then found Hermes' cave and confronted the baby, who acted completely oblivious.
But one day he found a herd of cattle which just so happened to belong to Apollo. He then led them away from where they were living.
Apollo took Hermes to a council of Gods on Mount Olympus. Zeus asked the baby if he knew anything about the cattle and the baby said no. But Zeus knew the truth and forced Hermes to take Apollo to his cattle.
Apollo was extremely mad! But the baby started playing its lyre and Apollo became interested. Apollo said that he would put his anger aside if Hermes gave him the lyre and taught him to play it. After that, Apollo became God of music.
