Goodman Brown Storyboard 2
This storyboard does not have a description.
My family is honest, we are all good Christians too.
My Faith is gone!
Every single person I see is evil!
Young Goodman Brown could be characterized as a very self-confident and hypocritical person in this story. Brown shows his confident side as he says, "We have been a race of honest man and good Christians since the days of the martyrs; and shall I be the first of the name of Brown that ever took this path and kept"(2). As shown in the image, Brown looks like a very smug, self-confident person, claiming that he's a good person from a good family that will be the first one to walk the path of evil. Goodman also shows his hypocritical trait since he knows he doing evil, yet he insists he's good when he mentions, "We are a people of prayer, and good work to boot, and abide no such wickedness"(3).
In this story, one of the symbols is Faith's pink ribbon, which symbolizes Brown's last bit of hope in humanity. Goodman Brown cries out after catching the pink ribbon, "My Faith is gone!' cried he, after one stupefied moment. "There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name"(6). As shown in this picture, Brown loses his faith in humanity, knowing that everyone really has an evil side as he clutches onto Faith's bow. Before that, the narrator states, "There was a scream, drowned immediately in a louder murmur of voices, fading into far-off laughter, as the dark cloud swept away, leaving the clear and silent sky above Goodman Brown. But something fluttered lightly down through the air and caught on the branch of a tree" (6).
One theme in this story is that everyone is evil, it's a part of human nature. The dark figure himself states, "Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness"(8). Just like this image shows, everyone, even the people who look completely innocent have an evil side, it's a part of a person's nature. Brown himself had learned that everyone has an evil side when he exclaimed, "There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come devil; for to thee is this world given"(6).
