Rainsford's pipe was knocked off his mouth. It was falling into the the water. Rainsford reached for it and lost his balance.
Rainsford struggled to stay on the surface of the water. He was trying to swim but with the cold water and salt water hitting his face, he was having a hard time keeping his head up.
I hunt more dangerous game. They use reason instead of simply running around.
Rainsford was trying to find the hunter. He was hungry and knew that wherever there was people, there was food. He finds a twenty-two and uses it to try and find the hunter's home.
Ivan was deaf so he didn't know what Rainsford was saying to him. Ivan just kept his revolver pointed at Rainsford.
The general was telling Rainsford about the game he hunts. Rainsford realizes the game is humans. He grows disgusted by the general's cruelness.
Rainsford was trying not to "lose his nerve." He was scared but he tried not to let his fear overcome him so he wouldn't do anything that would get him killed.
