The Whale Rider by Tyler Ewald
Author: Witi Ihimaera
Response Type: Cartoon
Kahu wanted the attention from her great-grandfather but he is too busy taking care of the tribe, the Maori in Whangara, New Zealand.
So Kahu helps the whale rider get back to the ocean when he got stuck in a cave on the beach (the whale rider is thought to represent the health of the tribe; if the whale rider dies, the tribe dies)
Kahu’s great-grandfather recognizes how special Kahu is and decides it is not important for the next tribe leader to be a boy and tells Kahu to take her rightful place among the tribe as the next leader.
