Huskies have invaded Buck's camp. While fighting off the huskies, Dolly is attacked and bitten by a swarm of huskies. These huskies are wild animals and have rabies. Dolly gets bitten, therefore getting rabies.
Since Dolly has rabies, she starts acting like a wild animal. An example of this is when Dolly tries to kill Buck by chasing him around the camp, trying to get a good chomp at him. Dolly fails to do so, making Francois takes matters into his own hands.
Francois has to kill Dolly in order to keep himself and the rest of his dogs safe. There is an antidote for rabies but the huskies took it while they were raiding the camp for food. Killing Dolly means that there is one less dog to pull the sled.
