Explaining the options within an Advance Directive is important, but respecting the patient's decisions shows patient's autonomy.
Dr. Edwards, the post operative patient has not voided in many hours. My recommendation is to insert a foley catheter. Do you concur?
Did I just give that medication to the wrong Mr. Williams? I need to go double check the MAR and assess the patient immediately!
A nurse must respect a patient's autonomy in making their own healthcare decisions. A good example of this is a patient's advance directive. The patient can decide to continue receiving treatment, or to be kept as comfortable as possible when diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Nurses must be responsible for their critical judgment. The nurse is exercising her responsibility in patient care by communicating to the physician her recommendation in order to prevent further complications.
Nurses take accountability and ownership for each task they perform. If the nurse administers a medication to the wrong patient, the nurse will take accountability for her negligence.
