  • Andrew Johnson April 15, 1865-March 3, 1869
  • Ulysses S. Grant March 4, 1869-March 3, 1877
  • Rutherford B. Hayes March 4, 1877-March 3, 1881
  • Party: Democrat President Lincoln's assassination leaves the office to a southern Democrat Andrew Johnson. He led in the Presidential Construction and offered special pardons to wealthy southerners.
  • James A. Garfield March 4, 1881-September 19, 1881
  • Party: Republican Ulysses Grant was a great general of the Civil War, but he was a poor president. He appointed many of his old war buddies as cabinet members. His administration was well-known for corruption.
  • Chester A. Arthur September 19, 1881-March 3, 1885
  • Go home.
  • Party: Republican Hayes had believed he would not become president but found the morning after the votes were cast he found he had won. One of his notable actions was appealing to the WTCU by banning liquor and wine from the White House.
  • Grover Cleveland March 4, 1885-March 4, 1889
  • Party: Republican Garfield was the last president born in a log cabin. He increased federal authority over the New York Customs House. He would later be shot by an embittered attorney and die of an infection.
  • Party: Republican When Chester Arthur took office he wanted to avoid the influence of political machines. He enacted the immigration law that banned all Chinese immigration for ten years.
  • Party Democrat Grover was the first Democratic president after the Civil War. He was known as the "Veto President" for his rejection of two pension bills for supposed war veterans.
