  • As a young British Imperial police officer in Moulmein, Burma, the narrator was subjected to hateful remarks and insults. The Burmese people have an intense disrespect for their oppressors. The narrator completely agrees and sympathises with them, he also has a job and position to uphold.
  • The narrator is informed about an elephant that has gone out of control, and has been showing aggressive behavior in the local bazaar. The Mahout had gone out in search for the elephant after it escaped, but went in the wrong direction. The narrator takes a rifle and goes in search for the elephant, but doesn't know what he'll do when he finds it.
  • The narrator finally finds the elephant, who had just killed a Dravidian coolie. A crowd begins to gather as the narrator finds the elephant peacefully eating grass in the field. The narrator knows and believes the elephant is no longer a harm, however the 2,000 people behind him want a show. If he walks away, he will look a fool.
