- Montresor has vowed to get revenge on Fortunato one night during carnival season in Italy.
- Climax
- Montresor is angry at Fortunato for insulting him and plots revenge. Montresor meets up with Fortunato at the carnival and mentions a rare wine he has purchased.
- Falling Actions
- Montresor brings Fortunato down into the catacombs where he claims to have the Amontillado. They slowly make their way further underground. Montresor keeps offering to turn back and keeps giving Fortunato more to drink.
- Resolution
- Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall.
- Montresor uses bricks to close the opening. Fortunato screams, cries out and laughs thinking it is a joke. Montresor throws in a torch and gets no reply.
- Fortunato is left die.
