  • Focusing student's attention elsewhere
  • Billy: (muttering to himself, but loud enough to get the attention he is seeking), "I can't complete this STUPID assignment, I have no idea what to do."
  • •distract from the behavior •focus attention on the task at hand
  • Ask a Direct Question
  • Mrs. Volpone: (moving closer to Billy) "Sure you can, Billy! I know that you are frustrated. Let me explain the directions again, so that you can better understand.
  • Ask a Favor
  • Billy: (feeling proud and confident), "Mrs. Volpone asked me to return these books to you, Mrs. Emplit."
  • Mrs. Emplit (smiling) "Why, thank you Billy, that was so helpful of you. I'm sure that the class appreciates it."

  • Mrs. Volpone: "Billy, I will allow you to CHOOSE whom you would like to work cooperatively with on this assignment, Kevin or Judy?"
