The Telescope

- Hello, My name is Hans Lippershey. I am an eyeglass maker. I was the first person to try to make a telescope. Here is the story of the telescope.
- The idea came to me one day when there were 2 children holding 2 lenses that made a weather vane in the distance

- Some people say that I stole the idea from another eyeglass maker named Zacharias Janssen. We lived in the same town and worked on the same tools.
- Scholars would say that there was no proof that I made the telescope but eventually I got the title of inventing it and Janssen got the title of making the compound microscope
- Another dutchman named Jacob Metius applied a patent for the telescope a few weeks after I did.
- The government turned down both of them due to the fact that they were very easy to reproduce.
- Finally, the officials decided to give Metius a small reward but they gave me a huge reward so I could reproduce my invention.
- In 1609 Galileo Galilei heard about “the dutch perspective glasses” and within days decided to make his own without seeing one in person. He made improvements to the original design
- He presented it to the Venitian State and was given lifelong salary to teach people about his creation
- Galileo was the first to point the telescope at the sky. He was able to see mountains and craters on the moon as well as a ribbon of light stretching over the sky which is now known as the Milky Way. He also discovered that Jupiter had its own moon.
- Galileo had some setbacks, at this time the Christian church still did have a very big impact so when they found out that there was a man who changed the beliefs that the planets revolved around the earth they put him on house arrest for the rest of his life so no one else would go against the church.
- All around the world people are using the telescope for teaching children about space or the fact that NASA would not be able to do what they are doing if it was not for the telescope.
- The telescope was an amazing invention look around I bet there would not be a lot of the things you use in your daily life if it was not for the telescope you would have a hard time doing lots if the every day things you do.
