In Autumn 1575 Spain declared bankruptcy, as they could not afford to pay their soldiers.
In the Netherlands the spanish soldiers decided to taking their own money by raiding Antwerp.
Sancho d'Avilla, who was the spanish commander, had the idea to raid Antwerp.
Antwerp's governor, gathered around 6000 troops on 3rd of November. Defences were also put up by civilians around Antwerp.
However, When the spanish soldiers attacked Antwerp, troops fled and this meant the civilians were left to fend for themselves. The civilians were against trained soldiers.
7000 people were killed, almost none of them were Spanish... The attack lasted for three days!
