Storyboard Text

  • Sally, you have missed curfew twice in the last week. When you are not home on time I get worried because I don't know where you are. I need to know you are safe.
  • Mrroowww
  • My curfew is so unfair Mom! All my friends can stay out later than me and I feel like I miss out on stuff because I have to come home so early...
  • What stuff do you miss out on?
  • Like inside jokes and stuff... I feel left out when I am not included in inside jokes because I was not there when something happened. It makes me sad to not be included...
  • So you need to feel like you are a part of the group with your friends? And extending your curfew would help accomplish this?
  • Sally's mother observed Sally has been late for curfew two times this week. Sally's mother is not expressing judgement of Sally, nor is she being vague. Sally's mother expresses feeling of worry and the need to know Sally is safe.
  • I think so... It sure would be nice to give it a try!
  • I understand you feel sad when you are left out of jokes and you need to feel included with you friends. I will extend your curfew until 2AM.... Would you be willing to check in with me every hour so I can know you are okay?
  • Oh thank you Mom! I will text you every 15 minutes if you want! I am so happy we could come to an agreement!
  • Sally expresses she feels sad when she is left out and her need to feel inclusion with her group of friends.
  • Sally's mother asks for clarification to make sure she understands Sally's feelings and needs.
  • Sally'smother agrees to Sally's request of extending her curfew with no ulterior motives. She also makes a request of her own so her needs are also met.
  • Yay! Using NVC Sally and her mother avoided what could have been an argument and instead they were able to communicate their feelings and needs. In the end, both parties were able to get what they wanted.
