Esperanza's friendship with Sally, a girl her age but sexually more mature, leads to a issue where Sally leaves Esperanza alone and a group of boys sexually assaults her.
Esperanza's tragic experiences causes her to want to leave Mango Street and to have her own house. When Esperanza feel that she is ready to leave she knows she is never able to fully leave Mango Street behind and when she leaves she will have to come back to help women she left.
Esperanza has a strong desire to leave Mango Street and wants to become a writer.
