  • Contrition begins before the celebration of the Sacrament. It requires examination of the conscience to recall the ways offence has been given to God by breaking His laws. 
  • What is Contrition?

  • Confession is when a person ‘owns up to’ all sins. There is no need to confess all venial sins, but only those for which the spiritual gifts of the sacrament are most needed.

  • SATISFACTION 
  • What is Satisfaction?
  • In the Sacrament of Penance, Satisfaction has 2 parts: the penance and the prayer of sorrow.
  • Penance is when the Priest states the satisfaction to be made. It usually relates to what has been confessed. 
  • PENANCE
  • What is Penance?
  • PRAYER OF SORROW
  • Prayer of Sorrow happens after Penance has been given. The Priest asks the person to say a Prayer of Sorrow. It can either be a formal prayer or a prayer in the persons own words. 
  • What is Prayer of Sorrow?
  • ABSOLUTION
  • Absolution is when the Priest 'absolves' or 'sets free' the person from their sins. The Priest then exercises the power to forgive a persons sins by holding his hand over the person's head and blessing them.
