One day while walking home from school, Stanley Yelnats was hit by a pair of sneakers that flew out of the sky. Thinking it was destiny for his father's invention, he took them. What Stanley didn't know was that those sneakers belonged to a famous baseball player. Clyde Livingston. Stanley was arrested.
Why are you running!? Whatcha got there?!
He was sent to Camp Green Lake, a dried up lake bed. There he met Mr. Sir, who told him that he would be forced to dig one hole every day. Five feet deep, five feet wide.
This ain't a girl scouts camp, boy!
One day while digging, Stanley found a gold tube with the initials "KB" inscribed into it. He gave it to X-ray, one of the boys at camp, and X-ray was given a day off from digging.
On another day, a kid named Magnet stole some sunflower seeds from Mr. Sir's truck. He began passing them around. When zigzag, one of the camp boys, threw them to Stanley, the seeds spilled out onto the ground. Stanley was taken by Mr. Sir to go see the Warden.
At the Warden's cabin, the Warden confessed the secret of her nail polish. It contained rattlesnake poison. The Warden slashed Mr. Sir's cheek with her nails.
One day, a strange kid named Zero was fed up with digging. He hit his camp counselor, Mr. Pendaski, with a shovel. He ran away from the camp, and Stanley had to decide whether of not he should follow Zero.
