  • This city may be flawed, but it sure is the best!
  • Throughout this poem, Sandburg describes the ups and downs of his beloved city, but in the end shows his love and adoration for it.
  • S- Shifts
  • One example of Sandburg's imagery is in line 13 where he writes, "Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth," This is believed to be a reference to the Chicago Fire of 1871, where the city was nearly demolished from its impact.
  • Theme
  • The attitude Sandburg shows is pride and or respect. He truly respects the city despite all that is has been through.
  • The beginning half of the poem focuses on all of the issues and flaws of Chicago. But, in the second half, Sandburg views these flaws with pride and demonstrates his love for the city.
  • The ultimate theme in this story is: Pride and respect for one's home town or alma matter.
