"The subject had reference to secret sin, and those sad mysteries which we hide from our nearest and dearest, and would fain conceal from our own consciousness.
After the funeral in which reverend Hooper had given his last condolences, people took notice to a ghost like figure holding his hand.
Once Mr. Hooper had raised his glass, and noticed his reflection on the looking glass, he dropped his wine out of horror.
During Mr. Hooper's first sermon he references to "secret sin" and "concealing our own conscious." The black veil used throughout the story is served as a metaphor to help others around him not make the same mistakes he did.
