  • The Ordinary World
  • Call to Adventure
  • Refusal of the call
  • The first step of Jospeh cambels hero journey monomyth is the status quo or the Ordinary world. In this step the hero is living comfortably in the Ordinary world not having experienced his call to adventure yet. In the Odyessy the Ordinary world is Ithaca when Odysseus is there. He is with his wife who has just given birth to his son Telemachus.
  • Mentor/Helper
  • The second step in the heroes journey is the call to adventure. The call to adventure is the hero being invited to do something heroic. The call the adventure can be an imeddite threat or something simple like a phone call but it always in turps the ordinary world. Odysseus's Call to adventure is when King Menelaus of Sparta calls Odysseus to war against troy
  • Crossing the Threshold
  • The third part of the hero journey is refusal of the call. This step involves the hero initially refuses to respond to the call to adventure for many reasons including family,freinds or security. In the Odyssey, after Odysseus is called to war by Sparta he fakes insanity to avoid going. However to force Odysseus to go they place Telemachus in front of a moving plow forcing him to reveal his sanity so he can save him. He is then forced to go fight in the trojan war.
  • Test/Allies/Enemies
  • The 4th portion of the Hero Journey is the mentor or helper choosing to guide the hero before crossing the threshold.The Mentor guides the hero throughout their journey offering them advice and guidance occasionally magical objects. In the Odyssey,Odyessues's mentor is Athena the goddess of war and wisdom. She guides and protects Odysseus when the other gods are angry with him.
  • The point at the adventure when the hero crosses into the land of the unknown and dangers is called crossing the threshold After this point the hero will face many dingoes on the journey. Sometimes there is a guardian guarding the point where the hero must cross the threshold. Odysseus must cross the threshold when he must begins to sail home from the trojan war.
  • After the crossing the threshold the hero must face many trial enemies and may gain some allies. This is where the meat of the adventure takes place and provide the primary obstacles to the hero's journey. Odysseus faces many trials and tribulations throughout the the Odyssey including the cyclops polyphemus who captures and eats his men due to Odysseus's curiosity
