  • Thomas Austin released 24 rabbits into Australia in 1859 so that he could hunt them.
  • Nuclear Testing
  • The rabbits quickly multiplied and by 1900 there were more than a billion rabbits in Australia.
  • 
  • The government tried many ways to decrease the population, but they were unsuccessful until the 1950s, when they infected the rabbits with a disease. This method decreased the rabbit population by 90%.
  • 
  • The U.S. chose the island of Bikini Atoll to test nuclear weapons.
  • The biggest explosion was a hydrogen bomb code-named Bravo. This explosion destroyed the island.
  • The Bikini Islanders were forced to move to new islands, but there were dangerous levels of radiation on several other islands.
