Penelope is asking Odysseus (who is disguised) questions about where he came from.
"Who are you, and where do you come from?"
"Please don't make me recall the pain of my family and hometown. "
Penelope explains that she is looking for her long lost husband, Odysseus, and that she has been putting off marriage for twenty years.
"If my husband were to come home, all of the suitors would leave, and we could live happily together."
"I told the men that I would get married once I finished my weaving. Every night I weave on the big loom, and then undo my weaving, but I cannot hide from marriage anymore."
Penelope again asks (disguised) Odysseus where he came from, in hopes that he knows something about where Odysseus is. He makes up a story that involves Odysseus.
"Odysseus is alive and well. I promise, he will come home."
I know how I'm going to choose my husband.
Penelope does not believe his story, and decides she needs to choose a husband.
