I trailed behind my father dumbfounded. I heard the faint sound of turrets and bombs dropping off in the distance. Why should the Jewish leave Germany?
I got into the carriage, but if I was being honest it wasn't as ornate as our other ones. My father explained the importance of traveling in secrecy and plainly.
As the storm came in and raged on, I began to think it rained for my sadness. For the fact I was leaving my country and being put on this ship like cargo. After sometime we docked in a German conquered harbor. I felt horror pulse through me when they said "Search the ship and take the Jews!"
I rushed under the trap door and hid in the lower cabins, where my father had already been. "Where should we hide?" I whispered to my father as I heard the soldiers storm on the deck above us. "We have nothing to hide dear. Nothing that marks us as Jews." I nodded and took off my mother's locket and threw it under a bed.
The soldiers ran down to the lower deck. Once they saw my father laying down and me assisting him, they did a quick sweep and left. Before they left they starred at my hair. My mothers hair from a predominant Jewish family. once they left we continued our journey to America. To freedom.
It was a long journey but I'm happy with my new life in America. I don't know what will happen, but I'm ready for anything. I can finally practice my faith freely.
