  • Getting to know Holden
  • Kicked out of Pency
  • Girls, girls, girls!
  • The boy in this picture is Holden. He looks to be an average boy but he has a lot of things going wrong in his life. The thought bubbles are things that describe Holden. The red hat is his "security blanket". The wings resemble his brother Allie who died when he was 12 years old. The pen and paper resemble his struggle in school. The duck represents the duck at the park.
  • Museum
  • In the beginning of the book, Holden gets kicked out of his current school, Pency. Holden has never been good in school but this time is different. He is not close to home. He gets kicked out and is too scared to tell his parents so he avoids going home and facing them. He develops a kind of close relationship with Professor Spencer. Before Holden leaves Pency he makes a trip to Mr. Spencer's house to say goodbye.
  • Phoebe and the Hat
  • Many times in the book Holden turns to girls to "help him through it". He likes Sally, Carl and even turns to a prostitute at the hotel to feel better. Even though Holden does not go through with it, he still thought having a girl in his life could make things better and help him through it. He also trys to talk to the girls at the bar, but that didn't go well for him.
  • Missing Everybody
  • The museum was one of Holden's "escape" places. He likes the museum because it does not change. According to Holden, everybody changes and everybody is a phony but the museum is all real, nothing fake about it. He likes the idea that if he goes back tomorrow or 5 years, everything will be the same.
  • Towards the end of the book Phoebe and Holden get closer and develop a better relationship with each other. Holden thinks that nobody understands him and doesn't see things through his eyes, but when Phoebe puts his red hat on his head, he finally is at ease because he knows at least one person gets where he is coming from.
  • At the end Holden returns home and plans on going to a new school in the fall where he is going to apply himself and do good in school. The last thing Holden says is, "... you will start missing everybody." This shows how through everything Holden has been through and the tough front he put on, there is something inside of him that misses all the people who have impacted his life.
