Many Hmong families were being killed by Pathet Laos. They had to flee into the jungles to Refugee camps because they had no where to hide, no where to go. They struggled living in the refugee camps with very little to eat. Wearing the same clothes everyday.
In 1987 Kao Kalia yang's father over heard they were closing the camp down. The people who tried and remain at the camp would be sent to Laos where it only mean't death for their selves.
The family gets on the bus to go to America and become Americans. Grandma is left behind. Although they will miss Laos. They knew it was only right for their children because they had futures.
