  • They must be stopped.
  • King George needed money to pay for the seven years war so he began to tax the colonists more. The King got rid of the currency they were using and said that they could only buy items with silver or gold, and taxed them on sugar and all paper goods.
  • Sugar Act, currency act, stamp act
  • Thats not fair.
  • If they tax us on paper they'll tax us on anything.
  • Something must be done about this.
  • The colonists did not like these taxes so they formed the Stamp Act Congress, which was their first attempt at a central government that went against the British. They decided to ignore the tax and boycott British goods.

  • Because the colonists stood up to the British some of the Acts were cancelled but the British angered the colonists again by making the Tea Acts. The colonists were furious, they viewed this as an attempt to bankrupt American merchants and drove home the idea that Britain was taxing them without their consent.Their response was the Boston Tea Party.
  • When the colonists refused to pay for the destroyed tea, which amounted to over $700,000, the British passed the Intolerable Acts. Many small skirmishes broke out and then the First Continental Congress began to assemble troops. The Battle of Lexington and Concord took place soon after that and the colonists were on their way to getting independence.
  • The colonists did not want the British to treat them fairly anymore, now they wanted freedom. John Adams met with the colonists and recorded their complaints in order to explain why they wanted their independence.
