  • Gene
  • "And not believing him, not forgetting that troops were being shouted toward battlefields all over the world, I went along as I always did."
  • Finny
  • "'I have a feeling I can swim faster than A. Hopkins Parker."
  • Leper
  • "'Yeah but that's it, that's why it isn't skiing. Skiing isn't supposed to be fast. Skis are for useful locomotion.'"
  • Gene starts to train for the 1944 olympics because Finny wants him to. Gene does not want to train for the olympics but he is forced to.
  • Brinker
  • '"your little plot didn't work so well after all."
  • Finny believes he can beat the swimming record set by A. Hopkins Parker. He defeated the record and has never swam competitively all his life.
  • Quackenbush
  • "'I've got to have some real help around here. This crew is going too win the New England scholastics, or my name isn't Cliff Quackenbush.'"
  • Leper cares more about looking at the scenery and enjoying skiing rather then doing it for a sport. This is showing he is artistic and appreciates the nature around him.
  • Dr. Stanpole
  • '"This is something I think boys of your generation are going to see a lot of, and I will have to tell you about it now. Your friend is dead.'"
  • Brinker only wanted to go to war if Gene went with him because Brinker doesn't like to do things by himself. Also, he really cares about war and he gets mad when Gene doesn't want to go because of Finny.
  • Quackenbush takes his job to seriously because he does not raise but he is only the manager of the Crew team. He liked bossing Gene around because it gave him this sense of power.
  • Dr. Stanpole has to tell Gene that Finny died and he tells him that a time like this that will happen a lot. Showing that adults can't help these young men being deployed to the army. Dr. Stanpole is the Devon doctor and he tried his best to save Finny but in the end could not
