  • Abraham Lincoln believes slavery must not be allowed in the territories.  Stephen Douglas says that popular sovereignty should decide the issue of slavery.  John Bell thinks that the federal government should support slavery. John Breckinridge says the federal government must protect slavery.  
  • Lincoln won easily, but had no Southern Electoral votes. He wasn't even on the ballot in most southern states. 
  • Seven states that made the confederate states of America.  South Carolina was the first to become a confederate state and six others followed.  Four more states seceded after Ft. Sumter.
