Governor Winthrop 1587-1649
Governor Winthrop lived to be 62 years old. He was a very courageous pioneer as he traveled to the New World leading many new settlers. Through his sermon "A Model of Christian Charity", he inspired the Puritans, while also warning them of the negative consequences that would occur from their failure. Winthrop's most known phrase and idea was his concept of "a city on a hill". Winthrop was well respected by the settlers as he was elected as the first governor of the new settlement. After his death, a meteor the shape of a "A" fell, which the citizens interpreted as standing for "Angel" showing God's welcoming to him in heaven.
