7:09 in the morning, Mia's kitchen, school has been cancelled because of an inch or two of snow, which is very rare in oregon. It's a day off for the whole family. This creates a place of commonality with the reader and the characters. Also it provides an easy way ot set the scene for the book.
8:17 in the morning, car, the roads are mostly clear of snow so Mia's family takes a trip to visit some friends. This car ride is what places the whole story in motion. Not only does it represents the movement from a simple life to a challenging one, but also is where Mia really starts to evaluate her life as a whole.
4:47 in the afternoon, hospital in Portland, Mia's condition is grave and her grandparents are there to watch over her as they pray for her recovery. Mia doesn't have a clue how she's in this ghost-like state but trying to figure out what to do slowly becomes clear as people talk to her about her life.
