  • Bravery
  • When Annemarie is taking the secret packet to Uncle Henrik she gets stopped by a Nazi. She has to stay calm and just say that her uncle forgot his lunch. If she wouldn't of done this the Jews wouldn't of been saved.
  • Lie
  • Who are you?
  • I am Lise
  • Annemarie had to tell the Nazis that her great Aunt Birte died and that she was in the casket. Annemarie actually didn't know who or what was in the casket. If the Nazis would have looked in the casket then everything would of gone wrong.
  • Lie
  • When Peter brings the illegal newspapers it is a big risk. We find out that Peter is part of the resistance fighters later in the book. Peter later dies in the book because of being in the resistance fighters. It took a lot of bravery to be a resistance fighter.
  • Lie
  • Your great Aunt-Birte died.
  • My great Aunt-Birte? I don't have a great Aunt-Birte.
  • Ellen lied to the Nazis that she was Lise (Annemarie's sister). That was a big lie and if she was caught she probably would of been killed. Ellen ended up getting away with saying that she was Lise but it was a really big risk.
  • When the Nazis told Mrs. Johansen to open the casket she said that Aunt Birte had a disease and it might be contagious. When she said that, the Nazi slapped her on the face. Then he walked out the door very angrily.
  • Mrs. Johansen and Uncle Henrik lied to Annemarie that her great Aunt-Birte died. This was a lie because there was no relative of the Johansens that was named great Aunt-Birte. Mrs. Johansen and Uncle Henrik had to say that her aunt died beacause they say its easier to be brave if you dont know everything.
