Hello welcome to the back to the Ancient Greece news. Today's issue; Direct Democracy vs Representative Democracy
First off who is involved in these different democracy's? Well in direct all of the citizens can vote but in representative is where people are elected to vote.
Now what is the difference between direct and representative democracy? Well direct is where all of the citizens can vote on major issues. But representative is where people are elected to vote.
Why did direct democracy happen? The Athens wanted to have citizens (excluding women, slaves and foreigners) vote for all major issues. Why is is best for representative democracy to be used today? There is an opportunity for genuine competition. (So that people don’t think that the election is rigged).
When did democracy begin? Well the form of government started around 500 B.C. in Ancient Greece.
Where did direct democracy begin? Direct democracy began in Athens. Where is representative democracy used now? Well you can see this form of government in Canada and also the United Kingdom.
