Don and Sancho begin their journey to find Dulcinea. They come to a fork in the road and need directions. They ask a shepherd and tell him what they were off to do. The shepherd teases them saying they was crazy and the place they are looking for is not real.
They come across a barn, which Don Quixote immediately believes it is the castle Dulcinea is trapped in. Sancho doesn't believe Dulcinea is even there, but keeps quiet for he doesn't want to lose his job.
The farmer comes out of his barn and Don believes him to be a knight guarding Dulcinea. The farmer makes fun of Don and calls him delirious.
Don Quixote takes the farmer seriously with his teasing. He hits the farmer, making him fall to the ground.
Don runs into the barn prepared to find Friston and Dulcinea. Sancho stays outside to make sure the farmer is ok. Don Quixote challenges a pole that has the farmer's hat on it. Thinking it's Friston, he hits it and goes off to find Dulcinea around the barn.
Dulcinea is not in the barn, but Don finds a half-eaten apple lying on the ground from one of the barn animal's meal. He claims it is the apple that poisoned Dulcinea, and he runs out of the barn and to go off and find where Dulcinea really is with the apple clue.
