On a parchment he wrote, Words to persuade his friend to go.
He spoke of family far away, How relatives were sick and much dismayed.
She loved him back, for he paid her well, To guilt she was not very compelled.
At last the 'prentice was free to love, And lead his life in the direction of wine, dice, and his friend's wife's love.
The friend came home and was aghast
He found them in his bed, And with drunken breath he cursed them dead.
His thoughts turned murderous inside his head, And stabbed the sheets until they bled.
The apprentice was wounded in the leg, But escaped to run out to the streets.
Over the next years his life wasted away, And sins filled his dreary days. He died from his habit of excess drinking, And no one attended his burial in the spring.
