  • The Finch family, consisting of Atticus, Jem, and Scout Finch, live in Maycomb, Alabama, In the 1930's. Atticus, the father, is a prominent lawyer. The narrator, scout as a grown woman remembering her childhood, explains it is a time of racism and Predudice.
  • Climax
  • A young black man, Tom Robinson, is accused of raping a white woman, and Atticus is asked to defend him. this is not easy; Atticus and his family must overcome the prejudice and preconceptions people of Maycomb have against Tom Robinson.
  • Falling Action
  • Scout and Jem, become the center of attention because their father is representing a black man. through the trial the children learn valuable lessons about justice, commitment, prejudice, and what is right.
  • Resolution
  • Tom is found guilty for commiting a crime he did not commit. Atticus's children cannot believe that the people they knew could sent an innocent man to the electric chair.
  • The man who accused Tom of raping his daughter, and occupier of the town dump, Bob Ewell, has made his anger known. He threatened Atticus, Judge Taylor, and Tom's wife Helen. Scout and Jem fear Ewell will do something to harm their father. Tom had tried to escape from prison and killed by guards in the preocess.
  • In the end Ewell goes after Scout and Jem, instead of Atticus. In the process,their reclusive neighbor, Arthur 'Boo' Radley, comes to the children's rescue. He kills Ewell with a kitchen knife, saving the children from an uncertain outcome. They let the cause of Ewell's death go unknown saying he fell on his knife and that "the dead can bury the dead"
