The Brokinsons had a son named Joseph whom they loved very much. They called him Jo-jo for short
Jo-jo was just like any other healthy baby his age. He loved to play with toys and other babies his age
But soon Jo-jo's mom noticed his language development was not to the point that should be expected of a 9 month baby. He could not make many sounds or string sounds together, and he did not react often to words spoken to him.
rrrrahhhh! maamama! daaaaaaaa mmm
How peculiar. The name of the protein and the gene are the same.
She began to worry, so she talked to her husband about her concerns. He was very understanding and they agreed to go see a doctor
When they met with a doctor, they found out that Jo-jo did in fact have sensorineural hearing loss, and that his was severe
The doctor also went on to explain that this was caused by a deletion of genetic material on the arm of chromosome 15. The gene that is missing, STRC or stereocilin, codes for a protein called stereocilin that is found in the inner ear.
