When someone had passed away their loved ones would buy an indulgence for their salvation. Luther did not believe that you could pay your way to heaven and it was all on your actions. This was just one of Luthers frustrations with the catholic church.
Once Martin luther became a monk, he found that he did not believe that the Church was teaching the bible. This caused him to write 95 complaints against the Roman catholic church. To show emphasis he nailed the 95 theses to the churches door .
In 1521 Luther was excommunicated. During the Diet of Worms Martin Luther then tried to defend his beliefs, there he was called an outlaw. In consequence all his writings were banned.
Since Martin Luther was going against the church the peasants started to too. The only difference was Luther was using words but the peasants were using violence. Therefore Luther didn't not believe what they were doing was right and towards God
Finally during the Peace of Augsburg the rulers were allowed to choose their religion. They could either be Roman Catholic or Lutheran Protestant. The people still had to be the religion of their rulers.
