Storyboard Text

  • Teenagers want to conform in order to feel a sense of belonging with their fellow peers.
  • LOVE YOURSELF!!!
  • I am Aileen Lemon. I get made fun of a lot because of the unique features I have, like my blue eyes (nobody likes blue eyes at my school), bright orange hair that I shouldn't have dyed, and the outfits I wear.
  • I really don't want to go to school today. I normally don't hang out with anyone because I don't look like ALL the other girls at my school. I'm just tired of being lonely and treated like an outsider.
  • See! I'm the only one that is different. Maybe tomorrow I will go home and change my look because then the girls at my school will accept me!
  • Ironic: She has a screen saver on her computer that says "LOVE YOURSELF", but she just wants to change everything about her later in the story. This connects to my theme because she is wanting to change to feel like she belongs at school, but in order to do that, she has to conform to the norms at her school.
  • LOVE YOURSELF!!!
  • Awe, honey I hate seeing you like this! If it really is going to make you feel like you fit it, then we can go and get you a makeover right now.
  • I'm just so done with school mom! I don't want to go back because I'm just so different! I really just want to be accepted just like all the other kids. Please, Mom let me get a makeover!
  • Symbolism: The color blue in her room represents sadness and the purple represents loneliness. This connects with my claim because she always feels like she doesn't belong, so she feels lonely; since nobody talks to her, she is becoming sad, almost depressed.
  • TRANSFORMED
  • Make me look like her, please!
  • How can I help you today at "Makeover Spa"?
  • Omg! Finally, I'm not being treated like an outsider! They have never talked to me before! But that answer is totally 6.
  • Hyperbole: All of the girls at her school look the same, but at a normal school not everyone looks the EXACT same. This connects to my theme because Aileen Lemon wants to look like the other girls, so then she can feel like she belongs at this school.
  • 3)Hey girls... I'm Aileen! I think that the answer is 8 too!
  • 1) Omg... who's that new girl? She is so pretty! Lets invite her over here! (waves to Aileen) and by the way I think that the answer to 2+4=8
  • 2) I think so too. Let's see what she thinks! (Aileen comes over) Hey... I'm Lila! Do you know what the answer on the board is?
  • Pathos: Aileen is crying because she is different and she feels like she can't fit in. This was just like when I was crying because I felt left out when all my friends were really skinny while I was thicker. I started to cry and work towards being thinner so then I could feel like "one of them". This connects to my theme because Aileen and I  want to conform so then we can be like the other girls at our schools. If she doesn't conform she feels like she is not a part of the "squad".
  • Logos: "Teens join gangs and cliques and select friends in an effort to feel a sense of belonging. One way teens achieve this sense is to dress and act like friends or members of the clique or gang. Conformity for some teens helps satisfy the belonging need.”-https://www.livestrong.com/article/5 This connects to my claim because, in order to "belong" to a group, you normally want to be alike in some way; that's why Aileen is getting this makeover.
  • Ethos: “In a classic 50s study, psychologist Solomon Asch told student participants they were to take a vision test... Overall, roughly 3/4 of the naïve subjects complied, adjusting their public judgment to conform to the group even though in their individual notes they indicated the right answer consistently. We use normative cues, in other words, to help us gain public acceptance.” This connects to my claim because teens will conform to the answers of other groups, just so they won't seem like the outcast of the group.
