  • Rev. Hale
  • No, no, now let me instruct you. We cannot look to superstition this. The Devil is precise; the marks of his presence are definite as stone. pg 479
  • In this example, Abigail is flirting with John Proctor. They had an affair before.

  • Let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word, about the other things, I will come to you in the black of some terrible night... pg 468
  • In this example, John Proctor does not want to be with Abby anymore. He wants to be with his wife so he tells Abby to put it out of ind and to stop thinking about it because it is not going to happen.

  • I'm gonna push her away gently. pg 470
  • In this example, Reverend Hale is talking to Reverend Parris about the Devil. He is talking about how the Devil leaves marks that are as definite as stone.

  • I must tell you all that I shall not proceed unless you are prepared to believe me if I should find no bruise of hell upon her. pg 479
  • In this example, Abigail is threatening the other girls. She knows that she has been caught so she tells the other girls to keep their mouths shut. She threatens them saying that if they don't keep quite, she would stab them.
  • In this example, John Proctor tries to push Abby away because she is not listening to him. He doesn't really want to hurt her so he pushes her away gently.
  • In this example, Reverend Hale is telling Parris that he needs to believe him if Hale tells him that he has found no bruise of hell upon Betty.
