Storyboard Text

  • The black box in “The Lottery” is symbolic of traditions and rituals.
  • The three legged stool in “The Lottery” is symbolic of past, present, and future.
  • The character's name Mr. Summers in “The Lottery” is symbolic of a contradiction the reader’s expectation of summer.
  • Commonly, When a certain thing is used over and over again it becomes a tradition/ritual in people’s lives. As a rule of this people in the village have taken the lottery into their lives as a tradition that they follow every year by picking a slip of paper out of the black box. The text states that, “the black box..had been put to use before the oldest man in town was born” this shows that the box has the power to change people’s lives and follow one certain tradition for their entire lives.
  • The symbol that represents my own life is The saying “Love is Love”
  • Love is love
  • Generally, when someone uses something year after year as a tradition it starts to symbolize something to each individual. As a rule this stool and it’s three legs could each mean one specific thing. Each leg on the stool could represent the past, present, and future of the villagers lives in the village.
  • Regularly, when someone thinks of summer they think of fun, happiness, and freedom to do what they want for three-ish months. This then swindles you into thinking that Mr.Summers is a nice man and to add on to his name his demeanor is so welcoming that the lottery may not actually be so terrible in the first place. Jackson uses this name for a reason because normally summer is a beautiful thing when in this story Mr.Summers is a symbol of death and destruction.
  • Most of the time when someone thinks of the saying “love is love” they think of equality. However, to me the saying means overcoming struggles. Therefore when I think of this symbol I remember that I can overcome anything I want to.
