One example of love in the book is the great bond amongst Mattie and her grandpa. So when her grandpa died her love was wonded.
"I bent down to kiss his forehead. I thought I heard his last word. "Love you."(p.147)
Another example in the book was when Mattie found Nell all alone without her mother. Thus Mattie’s inability to take care of herself, Mattie relates to the little girl for both their mothers are gone, so she feels love for Nell.
"I picked up the broken doll and heard a whimpering sound coming from an open doorway... a small child cowered in the corner, her blond hair loose and tangled, her feet bare and black with dirt... I held out the doll to her. “Is this yours?" I asked. “Broken," she said.(p.161)"
"Is your mama here? Or your papa? Perhaps they can fix it."
"Mama’s broken too."
