  • Jackson’s followers accused Clay and Adams of making “a corrupt bargain.”The corrupt bargain was the deal between Adams and Clay.
  • This issue cast a shadow over Adams’ presidency, and Congress turned down many of his proposals.
  • Adams would not get re-elected for a second term due to the shadow of a corrupt bargain and his unpopular federal policies (he tried to make the federal government more powerful).
