  • I have been learning about the UbD strategy. It is great for focusing in on specific goals.
  • Margot what do you believe a good strategy is for lesson planning?
  • The UbD is a 3 stage plan that allows teachers to look at lesson planning like a map
  • Stage1 focuses on what results you want to achieve: where you want to go; for example what standard you want to reach.
  • The strategy UbD for lesson planning focuses on student understanding. Understanding is the key to learning. Making connections across academic fields and bringing them into real life situations. 6 facets of Understanding: explain, interpret, apply, shift perspective, empathize, self assess.
  • Step 2 focuses on Evidence and what can be GRASPed.
  • That sounds so interesting what is step 2?
  • When first starting a lesson plan you first need to figure out 3 things: What are your desired results? What ways are possible to see evidence of understanding? What experiences would allow for achieving the goals?
  • Stage 3 is usually where everyone starts but in UbD its the last step. The lesson that allows for understanding
  • This makes so much sense. Like Planning a vacation, where you want to go is always first, and the itinerary is always last.
  • The focus of stage 1 is to determine the desired results What is the goal you are looking to achieve? Think about the to major ideas: 1- Making to connections to "Big Ideas" and 2- transferring information learned to new situations. Keep in mind that students are looking to answer essential questions and think about potential misconceptions.
  • GRASP: goal, role, audience, situation, performance. It is extremely important to keep in mind logical goals of stage 1 when thinking of assessments, which is what follows in step 2. In what ways can students connect information, show work and support their ideas.
  • The focus of stage 3 is the planning of the activity that logically flows from stage 1 and 2. There are 3 interrelated goals to keep in mind: acquisition, meaning making, and transfer. The key s to teach for understanding, the active participation and construction of knowledge of each student.
