In India they was called the brightest "Jewel in the crown" because it was Britain's biggest supplier of raw materials and the largest market for finished goods. Britain wouldn't allow India to get anything else from other place, other than Britain. Britain used India as a way to transport goods. India became more valuable after building a railroad network.
Britain tried to convert them to Christianity, and the constant racism. They jailed Sepoy because they refused to work with the army. The Sepoy rebelled and captured the city of Delhi. That's when the fight between Britain and Sepoys began. Sepoys lost and Britain had to find a way to punish them.
