In 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military alliance of European and North American democracies known as NATO was established. In that same year the Soviet Union launched its first bomb.
In June of 1950 United States and United Nations members fight Korean forces.
The Warsaw Pact was organized in answer to NATO in 1955. It included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union.
