One metaphysical aspect of this myth is that the main character is a god named Maheo. He creates the universe out of nothing. Another supernatural aspect is the character Grandmother Turtle who becomes the land and known as "Grandmother Earth". Maheo also created man from his rib.
The cosmological functions of this myth are that the Coot brought Maheo all he had to offer which was the ball of mud. This mud was spread over Grandmother Turtle's back to make land and light.
The pedagogical function of this myth is to teach the lesson that even the strongest people need help from others. It is to also teach people that it's usually in their best interest to execute actions to their full ability and to be fruitful and gracious.
