Fortunato badly insulted Montressor and now he smiles at the thought of his immolation, mot his impunity.
As Montressor greeted Fortunato at the circus he began his plan for retribution. He told Fortunato about his amontillado and by looking at his wobbly gait you could tell he was drunk.
Montressor was pretending to preclude Fortunato from going by saying he would go to Luchesi. But Fortunato prided his connoisseurship in wine and fell for Montressor's trap.
The men walked to the vaults and as soon as they got there they each took a flambeau and walked through the archway. As they walked towards the catacombs Fortunato began coughing and appeared afflicted.
Montressor said his family motto, then thought about how he was going to avenge Fortunato then ran towards him and chained him to a wall bearing niter, looking forward to his termination.
Montressor made a cement wall, but left a hole. He dropped the torch in the hole and heard the ring of Fortunato's bells. Montressor regretted it, but it was too late.
