The author shows that the characters are on a boat and in the water when one of the characters says, "There was no breeze. The sea was as flat as a plate-glass window. We were drawing near the island then. When I felt was a-a mental chill: a sort of sudden dread"Whitney said (Connell 62).
The most dangerous game By: Richard Connell
Connell explained what happened to Rainsford when he fell off the boat, "Rainsford remembered the shot. They had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength"(Connell 63). That quote shows us that Rainsford fell off the boat.
Connell shows that Rainsford won the game when General Zaroff said, "The General sucked in his breath and smiled. "I congratulate you," he said. "You have won the game" ( Connell 80).
When Rainsford was playing the game Connell explained this moment, "...the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell; but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it" (Connell 77).
Connel explained that Rainsford needed to jump off the cliff to win the game and shows how he jumped and what he did when Connell wrote, "Twenty feet below the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea..." (Connell 80).
The theme of the story is that you should not think someone is something when they prove you that they're better than what you think . For example General Zaroff thought that no one would beat him but Rainsford did.
Connell shows that Rainsford killed General Zaroff when Rainsford said, "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided" (Connell 80).
